Reclaiming Our Time

Across the world, peoples have shaped time as a cornerstone of identity, from the Inca’s solar monuments to the lunar rhythms of the Hebrew calendar, from Ethiopia’s ancient system to Japan’s Reiwa era. In this tradition of self definition, we establish the Newbeings 1619 Calendar as an act of decolonization and a formal acknowledgement of the Black American ethnogenesis. Our calendar’s epoch is anchored in a legislative turning point, not conquest. The foundational year is 1807, the date the “Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves” was passed. This law, effective January 1, 1808, did not end oppression but did catalyze the distinct accellerated ethnogenesis of African, European, Indigenous, and other lineages into a new people on this North American soil. Consequently, the historical record irrevocably establishes 1808 as our Year One as a new ethnicity. Black Americans*. By inaugurating this new time, we honor 1807 as a closing and begin our own count with a perpetual calendar of stable 28 day months. This fixed framework, where every date aligns perfectly with its weekday, builds a liberated and logical temporal order, finally synchronizing our time with our own documented becoming.

Our 7 Days of the Week

In the Newbeings 1619 Calendar, the seven-day week is re-envisioned as a sacred cycle for personal and collective actualization, each day named as a directive for conscious living. The cycle begins with Mindday, a day dedicated to setting clear intention through mindfulness and mental clarity. This foundation of presence flows into Trustday, a call to surrender the illusion of sole control and place active faith in a power greater than oneself. Midweek arrives with Wisday, a time to pause reaction and exercise discernment, choosing actions guided by deep wisdom over mere impulse. The momentum builds on Thriveday, a command to transcend bare survival and actively cultivate growth, abundance, and flourishing in every endeavor. This ascent peaks on Freeday, dedicated to both experiencing the profound joy of liberation and undertaking the necessary work to protect it for all. The week then turns inward with Seekday, a day of courageous questioning, study, and the relentless pursuit of hidden or obscured truths. Finally, the cycle completes with Soulday, a sacred pause solely for the replenishment of the spirit through rest, joy, and connection, ensuring one is whole and resonant to begin the journey again.

Entering our own time zone.

We never consented to being severed from our ancestors’ calendar, so we made an eXodus from the colonizer’s system and reconnected ourselves with the cosmic rhythms.
