Reclaiming Our Time

Across the world, peoples have shaped time as a cornerstone of identity, from the Inca's solar monuments to the lunar rhythms of the Hebrew calendar, from Ethiopia's ancient system to Japan's Reiwa era. In this tradition of self definition, we establish the Newbeings 1619 Calendar as an act of decolonization and a formal acknowledgement of the Black American  accelerated ethnogenesis. Our calendar's epoch is anchored in a legislative turning point, not conquest.

The Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves was passed in 1807 but took effect on January 1, 1808. Newbeings 1619 therefore honors 1807 as the closing year of one era and establishes 1808 as Year One of the Newbeings 1619 calendar.

Although the law did not end slavery, its implementation intensified the domestic slave trade and the conditions that accelerated the ethnogenesis of African, European, Indigenous, and other lineages into a distinct people on North American soil: Black Americans*. Our perpetual calendar begins with Year One in 1808 and is organized into stable 28-day months.

This fixed framework, where every date aligns perfectly with its weekday, builds a liberated and logical temporal order, finally synchronizing our time with our own documented becoming.

*We were already a new ethnicity prior to 1808.

28 Days Per Month

The Newbeings 1619 Calendar reimagines the seven-day week as a sacred cycle for personal and collective actualization, each day serving as an intentional directive for conscious living. Distinct from the Roman, Norse, and Anglo-Saxon roots of the Gregorian calendar, this calendar liberates timekeeping by rooting it in mindfulness and cultural purpose.

The cycle begins with Soulday, a sacred pause for spiritual renewal through rest, joy, and connection, ensuring wholeness for the week ahead. Mindday follows, focusing on setting clear intentions through mindfulness and mental clarity. Trustday asks for the surrender of control, encouraging active faith in a higher power. Wisday centers discernment, advocating wisdom over impulsive reactions. On Thriveday, the priority shifts to cultivating growth, abundance, and thriving in all endeavors. Freeday stands at the peak, blending the celebration of liberation with the responsibility to ensure it for all. Seekday then calls for courageous questioning, study, and the relentless pursuit of hidden truths.

This transformative weekly cycle unfolds within a year of 14 months (One month dedicated to intercalation): Newbeings, History, Unity, Tubman, Douglass, X, Emancipated, Innovation, Truth, Prosperity, King, Health, Future, and Alignment. By moving beyond the Gregorian calendar and its Roman, Norse, and Anglo-Saxon references, the Newbeings 1619 Calendar empowers us to live and mark our days with greater purpose, intention, and connection to legacy, beginning each journey with Soulday.

Entering our own time zone.

We never consented to being severed from our ancestors’ calendar, so we made an eXodus from the colonizer’s system and reconnected ourselves with the cosmic rhythms.
